Finalekoorts: RUS Dames Klaar om Geschiedenis te Schrijven in Ereklasse

De zon zakte langzaam achter de Utrechtse skyline toen Dutch Rugby Magazine gisteravond aanwezig was bij de laatste training van de RUS Dames – een sessie doordrenkt met energie, focus en onvervalst enthousiasme.

De sfeer op het veld? Elektrisch.

Vanaf het moment dat je het trainingsveld opstapte, voelde je het: dit is een team dat op het punt staat iets bijzonders te doen. Voor het eerst in bijna tien jaar staan de RUS Dames weer in de Ereklasse Dames Finale. Aanstaande zaterdag nemen ze het op tegen AAC Dames in wat ongetwijfeld een episch duel zal worden.

Maar voor deze groep gaat het om meer dan alleen 80 minuten rugby.

Een Team Gebouwd op Veerkracht

RUS is geen gewone club – het is een hechte familie. Dat werd meteen duidelijk bij een gesprek met enkele geblesseerde speelsters aan de zijlijn. Ze coachten, moedigden aan, en leefden volop mee – een bewijs van de diepe verbondenheid binnen deze ploeg.

Aanvoerster Lilian Ploeger en vice-aanvoerster Mhina de Vos bevestigden dat gevoel na de training.

“We zijn ontzettend enthousiast om hier te staan,” zei Ploeger met een brede glimlach. “Maar dit is niet het werk van één persoon – het is echt een teamprestatie.”
De Vos vulde aan:
“Iedereen heeft bijgedragen. De reserves, de geblesseerden, de staf – we doen dit samen.”

Een Coach met Missie

Hoofdcoach Sylke Haverkorn, een van de toonaangevende figuren in het Nederlandse vrouwenrugby, was helder in haar boodschap:

“We willen meteen vanaf het begin knallen,” verklaarde ze resoluut. “De afgelopen negen jaar zijn een flinke reis geweest. Met hobbels, hoogtepunten en natuurlijk de coronaperiode. Maar nu hier staan, dat voelt gewoon goed.”

Haverkorn wordt ondersteund door een sterk begeleidingsteam: Irene Jansen (voorwaartsen) en Elke van Meer (achterlijn) zorgen ervoor dat het team zowel fysiek als tactisch op topniveau presteert.

Alles op het Spel

De finale tegen AAC Dames wordt een spektakelstuk. Twee topteams, twee verschillende stijlen, maar met één doel: de landstitel veroveren.

As the sun dipped behind the Utrecht skyline yesterday evening, Dutch Rugby Magazine paid a visit to the final training session of RUS Dames before their long-awaited return to the Ereklasse Dames Championship Final.

The atmosphere? Electric.

You could feel it as soon as you stepped onto the training ground. There was laughter, purpose, intensity — the kind of energy that only a team on the brink of something special can generate. For RUS Dames, it’s been nearly a decade since they last reached this stage, and on Saturday, they’ll run out against AAC Dames with history on the line.

For this group, it’s more than just 80 minutes of rugby.

A Team Forged in Resilience

RUS isn’t just a club — it’s a family. That much became clear when speaking to several injured players watching from the sidelines, shouting support and encouragement between every drill. There’s a bond here built over years of highs, lows, setbacks, and comebacks. And now, they’re 80 minutes from glory.

Captain Lilian Ploeger and vice-captain Mhina de Vos echoed this sentiment when we caught up with them post-session.

“We’re so enthusiastic to be in this position,” Ploeger said, grinning from ear to ear. “But it’s not about one player or one coach — it’s been a full group effort from day one.”
De Vos added,
“Everyone’s contributed. Injured players, reserves, coaches — every single one of us.”

From the Touchline to the Touchline: A Coaching Vision

Head Coach Sylke Haverkorn, one of the most respected minds in Dutch women’s rugby, didn’t sugarcoat her intentions.

“We want to come out of the blocks firing,” she said firmly. “It’s been quite a journey over the last nine years. We’ve had our fair share of ups and downs — especially through COVID — so to be here now… it feels right.”

Haverkorn is backed by a talented coaching team in Irene Jansen, leading the forwards, and Elke van Meer, shaping the backline. Together, they’ve built a squad that blends physical dominance with sharp decision-making — and it’s brought them to the cusp of a national title.
