Oranje Dames maken zich klaar voor de openingswedstrijd van het Women’s Rugby Europe Championship tegen Portugal (Dutch/English)

Dutch Rugby Magazine sprak met Sam Martinez, de forwards-coach van het Nederland (Oranje) Dames-team, tijdens hun training op dinsdag. Met de langverwachte start van hun Women’s Rugby Europe Championship-campagne op zondag tegen Portugal gaf Martinez waardevolle inzichten in de voorbereiding, vooruitgang en verwachtingen van het team.

De Oranje Dames begonnen hun traject eerder dit jaar met een uitgebreide selectie en startten in januari met een brede spelersgroep. In de afgelopen maanden is die groep geleidelijk verfijnd en teruggebracht naar ongeveer 30 speelsters die nu deel uitmaken van het definitieve programma. Volgens Martinez was het selectieproces intensief, om ervoor te zorgen dat alleen de best voorbereide en meest toegewijde atleten in aanmerking kwamen.

“Ik ben echt blij met hoe het tot nu toe is verlopen,” zei Martinez. “Natuurlijk waren er een paar opstartproblemen, wat normaal is in een topsportomgeving, maar als groep hebben we grote stappen gezet. De speelsters hebben hard gewerkt, en we zien nu echt samenhang ontstaan binnen de selectie.”

Tijdens de training op dinsdag zag het team er scherp en gemotiveerd uit. De forwards werkten intensief aan hun set-pieces, terwijl de backs hun aanvalspatronen met snelheid en precisie uitvoerden. De energie op het trainingsveld was duidelijk merkbaar, met speelsters die elkaar aanspoorden om hun processen te perfectioneren in aanloop naar de wedstrijd op zondag.

“De meiden zijn in geweldige vorm,” voegde Martinez toe. “Hun enthousiasme en toewijding zijn fantastisch, en we kijken er echt naar uit om ze dit weekend in actie te zien.”

De teamselectie voor de wedstrijd tegen Portugal wordt vrijdag bekendgemaakt, waarbij de 23 speelsters worden onthuld die het veld zullen betreden voor hun eerste test van het toernooi. The Oranje Dames began their journey earlier this year with an extended squad, starting training in January with a broad pool of players.
