Belgium, however, will rue the chances they let slip. Their first visit into the Dutch 22 ended abruptly, a knock-on just five metres out denying them a crucial foothold. But when the Dutch backfield hesitated under a towering box kick, the Belgians pounced\u2014allowing the ball to bounce and then racing onto acres of unguarded turf. Suddenly, it was 12\u20135 after 22 minutes, and the neighbours had life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dutch fullback Bram Roters momentarily restored calm, thumping over a long-range effort from around 40 metres\u2014proof of a boot that could trouble anyone in Europe. Even so, Belgium clawed back with two penalties of their own, reducing the halftime score to 15\u201311 in favour of the Netherlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second half began just as the first had: Dutch power, Dutch precision, Dutch points. Four minutes in, the rolling maul surged forward like a runaway freight train, and who else but Toine Nguema peeled off to crash over for his second. Five tries in two games\u2014astonishing numbers for a prop\u2014and surely placing him front and centre in the Player of the Tournament conversation. With the score at 22\u201311, it felt as though Belgium\u2019s road was closing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But semifinals rarely follow the script.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The game settled into a lull at 27\u201318, before Belgium\u2019s resilience sparked back to life. They struck again to pull it to 27\u201323 with ten minutes left. The momentum shifted violently. Dutch discipline crumbled; two yellow cards reduced them to 13 men. From the restart, they regathered possession and hammered away with phase after phase. A crooked throw at the lineout seemed to doom them, but the Dutch scrum\u2014undermanned but unbowed\u2014obliterated the Belgian feed.
